Teachers introduce turns through physical movement before asking children to interpret arrows, diagrams or grid instructions.
At home, follow this sequence: identify the starting direction, name the amount of turn, identify clockwise or anticlockwise movement, perform the turn and check the finishing direction.
A turn can only be described clearly when the starting direction is known.
Ask your child to stand facing a clear reference point such as:
State the starting direction before giving the turn instruction.
Look around the home, classroom or playground for objects that rotate.

A quarter turn is one of four equal parts of a full turn.

A half turn can be completed clockwise or anticlockwise.
A three-quarter turn is equal to three quarter turns.

A three-quarter turn clockwise finishes in the same direction as a quarter turn anticlockwise.
A full turn is equal to four quarter turns or two half turns.
After a full turn, the person or object returns to the original direction.
A full turn can be completed clockwise or anticlockwise.
Use movement to compare the different turns.
Encourage children to build larger turns from quarter turns.
Clockwise means moving in the same direction as the hands on an analog clock.
Starting at the top of a clockface, clockwise movement travels:

Use a large floor clock or teaching clock to demonstrate the direction.
Anticlockwise means moving in the direction opposite to the hands on an analog clock.
Starting at the top of a clockface, anticlockwise movement travels:
12 → 9 → 6 → 3 → 12
Clockwise does not always mean turn right, and anticlockwise does not always mean turn left when describing a longer turn.
The words clockwise and anticlockwise describe the direction of rotation around a central point.
Always name both the amount and direction, such as “quarter turn clockwise” rather than simply “turn right”.
Ask your child to stand on a marked spot facing forwards.
Give instructions such as:
Ask the child to state the finishing direction.
Place arrows on the floor pointing in four directions.
Ask the child to begin on one arrow, perform a turn and identify the arrow they now face.
