A turn changes the direction an object or person is facing.

The amount of turn describes how far the object rotates, while clockwise or anticlockwise describes the direction of rotation.

A full turn can be divided into equal parts:

  • a quarter turn is one of four equal parts of a full turn;

1. Begin with a Starting Direction

A turn can only be described clearly when the starting direction is known.

Ask your child to stand facing a clear reference point such as:

A quarter turn is one of four equal parts of a full turn.

When standing and facing forwards, a quarter turn changes the direction to one side.

  • a quarter turn clockwise may make the child face right;
  • a quarter turn anticlockwise may make the child face left.

The finishing direction depends on the starting direction.

4. Understand a Half Turn

A half turn is equal to two quarter turns.

After a half turn, the person or object faces the direction opposite to the starting direction.
