The Big Idea for Parents

Fractions must describe equal parts of the same whole.

Dividing an object into two pieces does not automatically create halves. The two pieces must be equal.

The same principle applies to quarters and eighths:

  • 2 equal parts are called halves;
  • 4 equal parts are called quarters;
  • 8 equal parts are called eighths.

Children should also understand that the size of each part becomes smaller as the number of equal parts increases.

For the same whole:

  • a half is larger than a quarter;
  • a quarter is larger than an eighth;

1. Begin with One Whole

Before discussing fractions, clearly identify the whole.

The whole may be:

Fraction parts can only be compared properly when they belong to the same-sized whole.

2. Explain Equal Parts
