Identify how text connectives including temporal and conditional words, and topic word associations are used to sequence and connect ideas

Connect ideas so readers can follow

Use time words, conditions, clear references and related topic words to connect ideas across sentences and sections. Explain what each link does, then use it in your own writing.

Success looks like: I can trace a pronoun to the person or thing it means, choose a link that matches the relationship, order sections using events, and write a short connected text.

Materials and time: paper or a usual writing aid; about 20 minutes for the lesson, with extra time for writing and review.

What makes a text hold together?

• Cohesion: language links that help parts of a text hold together. Coherence: the ideas make sense together.
• Reference: a word points to something named earlier. In “Mia found a shell. She washed it”, “She” means Mia and “it” means the shell.
• Determiner: a word before a noun helps identify it: this shell, that shell, these shells, those shells. In a text these groups can point back to things already mentioned.
• Text connective: a word or group that signals a relationship: time, result, addition or contrast. A condition links a possible situation with an action or plan. “Only if” specifically makes that condition necessary.
• Topic word association: related words keep a topic going. They can name different parts, people, actions or contrasting ideas; they need not mean exactly the same thing.

Boundary: practise reading and creating connections in short texts. Knowing simple sentences and common pronouns helps. Detailed clause classification and semicolon rules belong in other lessons; word length does not measure cohesion.

Keep the reader sure what you mean

Compare “Mia found a shell. Mia washed the shell.” with “Mia found a shell. She washed it.” The pronouns reduce unnecessary repetition while keeping the people and objects clear.

“Mia found three shells. These shells had striped surfaces.” The determiner “These” works with “shells” to identify the shells already mentioned. “That shell” can pick out a previously identified single shell; “those shells” can pick out a previously identified group. Context tells the reader which ones.

Repair: “Mia gave Ella a shell. She washed it.” If Ella washed it, write “Ella washed the shell.” Two people could fit “She”, so naming Ella helps. A pronoun is useful only when its reference is clear.

Check: In “The class made flags. These decorations brightened the room”, what are the decorations? Answer: the flags; “These decorations” points back with a broader related noun.

Choose the meaning before the connective

“The ground was waterlogged. Therefore, the oval was closed.” Therefore shows a result: the wet ground led to closure.

“The garden has a shady seat. In addition, it has a drinking tap.” In addition adds another feature. It does not say that the seat caused the tap.

“The walking track was steep. However, the group enjoyed the view.” However marks a contrast with an expectation that the difficulty might reduce enjoyment. “The track was steep. Nevertheless, the group reached the lookout.” Nevertheless means they continued despite the difficulty.

Try a change: Replace “Therefore” with “However” in the oval example. Does it still show closure as a result? Answer: no; “However” signals a contrast instead. Both sentences must support the relationship you intend.

Time links organise a whole text

A procedure uses ordered steps because sequence matters. A story may organise events to build tension, and a report may group related facts under headings. In each case, links help readers follow the movement between sections.

The sections move from planting to observing to reporting. “Firstly”, “Then”, “Next” and “Finally” show that sequence. The actual events also have to fit: a seedling cannot be drawn from observation before it appears.

In “Before the visitors arrived, we arranged the chairs”, arranging comes first even though arriving is mentioned first. “Meanwhile” or “while” can connect things happening during the same time. “We waited until the bell rang” shows how long the wait continued.

Time is not always sequence: “Today we are making a display” locates the event in time; “currently” also points to the present. Neither word by itself orders two separate actions.

Connect possibilities and keep the topic going

“If the track is closed, we will use the park path.” The condition is the track being closed. The sentence does not say whether it is closed yet. “Unless the teacher changes the plan, we will meet in the hall” means we will meet there if the teacher does not change the plan. “Only if” makes a condition necessary: “We may leave only if an adult gives permission.”

Check the condition against the situation. Do not choose “if” or “when” just because one is shorter; they can change whether an event is treated as possible or expected.

“Koalas rest in trees. These animals eat leaves. The tree canopy provides places to rest.” Koalas, animals, leaves, trees and canopy develop the same topic in different ways. A paragraph is easier to follow when its sentences develop one main idea rather than jumping between unrelated points.

Topic links can include opposites or different roles: “The attacker moved towards the goal. The defender blocked the shot.” These words belong to one game even though attacking and defending are different actions.

• E1: recognising how authors construct texts that are cohesive and coherent using pronouns that link to something previously mentioned and determiners; for example, “this”, “that”, “these” and “those”, to identify things
• E2: recognising how authors use text connectives to create links between sentences; for example, “however”, “therefore”, “nevertheless” and “in addition”
• E3: recognising how text connectives link sections of a text, providing sequences through time; for example, “firstly”, “then”, “next” and “finally”

Read, explain, repair, create

1. Explicit teaching and modelling: read the Mia/shell and oval examples aloud. Point from each reference back to its noun, and name the cause/result before choosing “Therefore”.
2. Guided analysis: compare the garden/addition and track/contrast examples. Ask “Does the second idea add, result from, or contrast with the first?” Explain using the actual ideas.
3. Collaborative and independent practice: mix the three seed-report sections. Partners order them with event evidence. Independently write two connected sentences about another familiar task, including a clear reference.
4. Formative assessment: use the exit ticket below. Check the actual repair and explanation. If a learner names a connective but cannot explain its relationship, return to the two ideas and model the link again.

Quick checkpoint: “The display board was full. Therefore, we used a second board.” Ask why a second board was needed. Continue if the learner links full capacity to the extra board; reteach if they only say that “therefore” is a connective.

Support: use two sentence cards and draw reference arrows. Core: repair and explain references, conditions and sentence links. Extend: compose two short sections on one topic, then explain three different links without adding unrelated details.

Four checks that improve cohesion

• “Any connective will do.” Read both ideas. Addition, result and contrast are different relationships; choose the one your text supports.
• “A pronoun always means the nearest noun.” Check meaning and grammar. If two people or objects could fit, name the intended one.
• “Firstly makes any event the first step.” Check what must happen before something else. Labels cannot repair an impossible sequence.
• “Topic words must be identical or synonyms.” Related parts, people, equipment and opposing roles can keep the same topic. Explain the connection, not just a repeated word.

Explain the link

Why use a pronoun? It can avoid unnecessary repetition once the reader knows the person or thing. Repeat the name when that keeps the meaning clearer.

How is “therefore” different from “in addition”? “Therefore” presents a result; “in addition” adds related information without claiming a cause.

Can a condition be unfulfilled? Yes. “If the room is free, we may use it” does not promise the room will be free.

What connects two sections? References, topic vocabulary and text connectives can work together. A time word helps only when it matches the events and the intended order.

Try, then explain

1. “The rehearsal ran late. Nevertheless, we finished the final scene.” Explain “Nevertheless”. Model: the group finished despite the difficulty of running late. Hint: look for the expectation that was overcome.

2. Write two linked sentences about rain changing a game plan. Underline the connective and explain the relationship. Model: “Rain flooded our playing area. Therefore, we moved the game indoors.” The move is a result of the flooding. Accept a different sensible plan and correctly explained link.

3. Make a short mixed-up text easier to follow. Change one unclear reference or move one section, then explain how it helps the reader. Example: “Finally, display the painting. Firstly, paint the picture.” becomes “Firstly, paint the picture. Finally, display it.” The picture must exist before it is displayed, and “it” refers to that picture.

Writing and explanation tasks need an adult to look at the actual work. A completed response is evidence to check, not an automatic correct mark.

Show what you can do independently

“The class built a model. It painted it. Finally, the class displayed the model. Firstly, the model dried.” Name the class again for extra clarity and repair the sequence, keeping all four events. Add a new sentence with a condition about displaying outside. Explain one time link and the condition.

One model: “The class built a model. The class painted it. Next, the model dried. Finally, the class displayed it. If the weather is dry, the class may display it outside.” “Next” places drying after painting; dry weather is the condition for the outdoor display.

Adult check: require building, painting, drying and display in a workable order, clear references, a genuine condition and both explanations. Accept other suitable words and conditions. If a link is unclear, ask the learner to name the person, object or event and try the sentence again.
