Success criteria: name the purpose; identify two connected clues in the stages or language; explain how those choices help the reader; try a short text with a deliberate organisation.
Purpose is what a text aims to do: inform, entertain, persuade, describe, reflect or guide an action. A stage is a part with a job, such as introducing a situation or supporting a view. Text structure is the arrangement of those parts. Language features include choices such as past-tense verbs, dates, comparisons, precise nouns or words giving reasons. Form is how the message is presented, such as an email, poster or list.
Read the opening, follow the parts and connect several clues. Typical structures help us predict what comes next, but they are not rigid templates. One word, picture, subject or tense does not prove a text type.
“At the art table, Sam unpacked a model bridge. One support snapped. Sam folded a card into a brace, and the bridge stood again.”
Opening/orientation: Sam and the model at the table. Problem: a support snaps. Response and resolution: the card brace lets the bridge stand. Action verbs such as snapped and folded move events along. A story may use dialogue or description to build interest; not every story follows exactly this pattern.
Invented classroom scenario: the notes say the class arrived at the garden at 9:30, counted seedlings at 9:40 and returned at 10:00. A recount reads: “This morning our class visited the garden. At 9:40 we counted the seedlings. We returned at 10:00.”
The opening orients readers; the events follow time order. Past-tense verbs and times help the reader follow what happened. These are facts within a supplied made-up scenario, not a claim that this visit really took place. A historical recount uses checked records of real past events.
“Last night I sailed inside a teacup. First I crossed a sea of milk. Then a biscuit island appeared. At dawn I steered home.”
The first-person I and time words organise a remembered-sounding account, but its experience is deliberately imaginary. Recount structure does not turn invented events into facts.
Ruby Payne-Scott was born in Grafton, New South Wales, in 1912. She graduated from the University of Sydney in 1933. She completed an MSc in physics in 1936 and joined CSIR’s Division of Radiophysics in 1941.
Dates arrange selected life events chronologically; Ruby and she use third-person reference. A biography can group some events by topic, but a short chronological account helps readers follow change over time. Do not invent someone’s thoughts or quotations. Fact source: CSIROpedia, Ruby Payne-Scott. CSIR was the organisation’s name at the time of her 1941 appointment.
An information report often introduces a class of things, then groups related facts. It commonly uses precise nouns, headings and present-tense statements about general features. An explanation tells how or why something happens. It may trace stages, connect causes and effects, or do both.

Worked comparison: “Both trolleys have shelves” starts a comparison. “A hand bell has a handle…” starts a whole-to-parts description. Both inform, but their grouping serves different questions: How are these alike or different? and What are its parts?
Look beyond signal words: then can occur in a story as well as an explanation. Ask whether the text is retelling an event or explaining a process. A causal account must connect reasons and results, not just contain because.
Other useful subject texts: a procedure gives a goal, materials if needed and ordered instructions such as “Fold the card, then press the crease.” An investigation report may give a question, method, results and conclusion. It is not the same as a general information report. Science, history and other subjects each use several text types according to the task.
Original invented mini-story, The Tiny Door: “Anika finds a door in the back of a cupboard. A warm light glows under it. When she knocks, someone knocks back.”
Model talk: “The Tiny Door is a mystery about Anika discovering an unexpected door. I like the answering knock because it makes me wonder who is there. If you enjoy mysterious discoveries, you might like this story.”
The title and brief gist orient listeners. The response and recommendation use a story detail as a reason. A book talk can inform and express an opinion; it need not reveal the ending. Only a short opening has been supplied here, so do not invent a published author or claim to know the ending.
“Our class should keep a box of spare pencils. In our made-up class record, six students borrowed a pencil yesterday. A spare box helps people start work when a pencil is missing. Please keep the box beside the teacher’s desk.”
The first sentence states a position. The next two give a specific piece of evidence and a reason. The ending returns to the proposal. Words such as should and please help express a view and request. Evidence must match the supplied facts; six borrowers does not prove that every student always needs a pencil.
My paper boat slipped from the shore. It caught beside a stone. I reached it with a fallen twig and brought my sailor home.
An event leads to a difficulty and a response. The sequence helps the reader follow the little story.
Grey stones under clear water, a green ribbon of weed, sunlight trembling on the sand.
The related images build a creek scene. There is no required problem and resolution; small movements can be part of description.
The swing hangs still today. I remember feet reaching for the clouds. Perhaps growing up means finding new ways to fly.
The poem moves from an observation to a memory and a thought about growing. Reflection means thinking about an experience or idea, not just naming an emotion.
Poems may tell stories, describe, reflect or combine purposes. They do not all need rhyme, the same number of lines, or one universal set of stages. Explain the movement of the particular poem you read.

A packing list organises needed objects; a list of reasons supports a view. Neither the line breaks of a list nor the format of an email fixes its purpose. Different forms can also share a purpose: an invitation in an email and on a poster both need clear event details.
Purpose redesign: change a report about the exhibition into an invitation. Keep the true event details, choose a welcoming opening and select reasons for the audience to attend. Explain these structural changes, rather than merely making the heading larger.
Materials and pacing: paper or a usual communication tool; read a few short models at a time over two or three sessions. No outside account, paid lesson or video is required.
Support: read aloud and highlight two connected parts; accept spoken answers or communication support. Core: identify and justify a text’s organisation. Extend within this code: change the purpose of a short message and explain the resulting changes. Do not require long essays or advanced literary terminology.
Useful supporting clarity: “Mia found a shell. She washed it.” uses pronouns to connect sentences. A focused paragraph keeps related ideas together. These help a reader follow a structure but do not, on their own, identify its purpose.
“The class should put labels on the storage boxes. Last week three groups could not find their materials. Labels would help groups find the right box.” Identify the position and explain the job of the second sentence.
Answer: the first sentence proposes labels. The second supplies a specific event as support; it is not a step in making labels. Review hint: connect the evidence to the proposed action.
“Both display stands hold six pictures. Stand A folds flat, whereas Stand B stays upright.” Name the organisation, quote a clue and explain how it helps the reader. Then write one sentence beginning a part-whole report about an invented stand.
Expected evidence: comparative organisation; both, the same capacity, or the folding contrast; an explanation that matching features makes comparison clear. A part-whole opening might be “The stand has a frame, a base and clips that hold pictures.” Accept other clearly invented parts. If the learner only says “it informs”, reteach the difference between the broad purpose and the grouping of information.
Read: “Both storage boxes have lids. Box A has two handles, whereas Box B has one.” This is a comparison because it matches lids and handles across both boxes. The organisation helps readers see what is alike and different.
Read the whole supplied text. Identify its purpose and the job of its parts. Support your answer with details from that text. Complete any writing or speaking task so an adult can check the actual work.
The content description is the required target. The elaborations below are taught as examples and contexts, not as disconnected checklist wording.
Where the coverage is taught: E1 is developed through the nine named text types across the worked models. E2 is shown in the four report/explanation rows. E3 is taught through the three original poems. E4 is developed through the poster, email and list comparison and purpose-redesign task.
Year 4 boundary: read short texts, notice typical stages and language, and explain their purpose with evidence. Brief composition supports that understanding. Formal genre formulas, advanced grammar analysis and lengthy essays are not required.
