Year 1 Maths extends early number sense into more deliberate strategies. Students begin working with larger quantities, partitioning numbers, skip counting, addition and subtraction, equal groups, measurement, time, shape, position, patterns and data.
What changes in Year 1 Maths?
Children still benefit from concrete materials, but they increasingly connect those models to diagrams and symbols. For example, an addition story can be acted out, shown with counters, represented as a part-part-whole model and finally written as a number sentence. Good practice keeps those representations connected.
Use the curriculum unit as your map
The Year 1 Maths curriculum units separate broad maths into precise learning goals.
