Represent and Process Scientific Data

A useful representation matches the data and purpose, processes values correctly and makes patterns visible without hiding limitations

Ready to project and teach

Key conceptTeach from the board

Use the chain question → data type → representation → processing → pattern → limitation. A neat representation is not necessarily an honest or useful one.

In a spreadsheet, =AVERAGE(B2:B6) calculates a mean and =SUM(B2:B6) a total. Convert to consistent units before combining or averaging values.

Use a line graph for change over a continuous variable, a scatter plot for two quantitative variables, a bar chart for categories and a pie chart for parts of a whole—not change over time.

Models and diagrams must preserve the science. An energy-flow diagram includes important stores and transfers, with arrows showing the direction of transfer or transformation; a particle model distinguishes physical rearrangement from chemical formation of new substances.

Questions and answersWith answers
  1. Which graph for categories? A bar chart, with separated category bars.
  2. Why use cell references? Formulas update when source data changes and are easier to audit.
  3. What belongs on graph axes? Independent variable on x and dependent variable on y, with names and units.
  4. How is a model evaluated? By its purpose, evidence, strengths, assumptions and omitted features.
Practice and reviewReady for practice
A pie chart shows change over time well. Correction: A line graph is usually appropriate for continuous time data.
The dependent variable belongs on the x-axis. Correction: Conventionally the independent variable is on x and dependent on y.
An outlier should be deleted. Correction: Investigate it and justify any exclusion.
A model is an exact copy of reality. Correction: Every representation selects features and has limitations.
