Help your child recognise, represent, read, write and order numbers to at least 1000. This parent-friendly guide explains how teachers introduce place value, number lines, hundreds charts and large collections before children complete the printable activities aligned with Australian Curriculum AC9M2N01.
In Year 2, children move beyond simply counting objects one at a time. They begin to understand how our number system is organised into groups of ones, tens, hundreds and, where appropriate, thousands.
The most important idea is that the value of a digit depends on where it is placed. In the number 352, the digit 3 represents 3 hundreds, the digit 5 represents 5 tens and the digit 2 represents 2 ones.
Children also learn to recognise numbers in different forms. For example, 352 can be shown as a numeral, spoken as “three hundred and fifty-two”, built with place-value blocks, partitioned as 300 + 50 + 2, or located on a number line.
Parents can support this learning by using familiar objects, asking children to explain their thinking and encouraging them to show the same number in several different ways.

When teachers introduce numbers to 1000, they do not begin by asking children to memorise long lists of numerals. They first help children understand how numbers are built.
At home, follow the same approach: build it, say it, write it and locate it.
Use objects that are easy to count and group, such as buttons, bottle tops, pegs, pasta pieces, blocks, craft sticks or coins.
Ask your child to make groups of 10. Then place 10 groups of 10 together to make 100.
This helps the child understand that:
Do not rush to the written numeral. Let the child physically group and regroup the objects first. The concrete experience gives meaning to the digits they will write later.
Write a three-digit number such as 364. Point to each digit and explain:

364 = 300 + 60 + 4
Ask your child to build the number using place-value blocks, bundles of sticks or drawings.

Choose a number such as 428 and ask your child to show it in several forms:
This helps children understand that the representations look different but describe the same quantity.
Numbers containing zero are often difficult because children may ignore the zero or move the other digits into the wrong places.
Compare:
Use a place-value chart with a separate column for hundreds, tens and ones. Leave an empty space or place a zero card in the column where there are no groups.
Children may confuse numbers that use the same digits in a different order, such as 808, 880, 818 and 881.
Teach your child to compare from the greatest place value first:
For example, when comparing 818 and 881, both numbers have 8 hundreds. The tens digits are different, and 8 tens is greater than 1 ten, so 881 is greater than 818.
Before filling in a missing number, teach your child to identify the interval between the marked points.
Ask:
Children sometimes count the marks instead of the spaces. Remind them that the interval is the jump from one mark to the next.
On a standard hundreds chart:
Cover parts of a chart and ask your child to work out the hidden numbers using neighbouring squares.
Ask your child to explain how they know. A correct answer is useful, but an explanation shows whether they understand the number pattern.
To order a group of numbers, compare the greatest place value first.
For example, to order 275, 725, 257 and 572:
The ascending order is: 257, 275, 572, 725.
Use a place-value chart to show 4 hundreds, no tens and 5 ones. Explain that zero keeps the tens place empty.
Compare the number of digits and the greatest place value. A three-digit number has at least one hundred, while 92 has no hundreds.
Ask the child to identify the hundreds, tens and ones before writing. Use a place-value chart rather than writing the entire number immediately.
Encourage grouping into tens and hundreds. Ask, “Could we organise these objects so they are quicker to count?”
Ask the child to calculate the interval before entering any missing values.
Trace the chart across each row and demonstrate that moving down one square increases the number by 10.
Teach children to compare from left to right, beginning with the greatest place value.
Collect craft sticks, straws or pencils. Make bundles of 10 and place 10 bundles together to represent 100.
Ask your child to record the total as hundreds, tens and ones.

Say a number such as 347. Ask your child to build it using blocks, bundles, drawings or a place-value chart.
Then ask the child to write 300 + 40 + 7.

Give clues such as: “My number has 5 hundreds, 2 tens and 8 ones.”
Ask your child to identify the number and explain each digit.

Write two numbers on cards. Ask your child to identify the greater number and explain the comparison from the hundreds place onwards.

Write five different numbers on cards. Ask your child to arrange them from smallest to largest and then reverse the order.

Place number cards along the floor. Leave some positions empty and ask your child to place the missing numbers in the correct locations.
Focus: Number sequences and intervals.
Give instructions such as: “Start at 46, move down two squares and then move right three squares.”
Ask your child to name the finishing number and explain each movement.
Focus: Hundreds chart patterns.
Look for numbers on calendars, receipts, house numbers, product labels, sports scores or page numbers.
Ask your child to read each number and identify the value of one selected digit.
Focus: Reading numbers in real contexts.
Compare numbers such as 407, 470, 704 and 740.
Ask your child to build, read and order the numbers.

Collect safe recyclable objects such as clean bottle tops or bread tags. Group them into ones, tens and hundreds.
