About This Year 2 Maths Topic

In Year 2, children move beyond simply counting objects one at a time. They begin to understand how our number system is organised into groups of ones, tens, hundreds and, where appropriate, thousands.

The most important idea is that the value of a digit depends on where it is placed. In the number 352, the digit 3 represents 3 hundreds, the digit 5 represents 5 tens and the digit 2 represents 2 ones.

Children also learn to recognise numbers in different forms. For example, 352 can be shown as a numeral, spoken as “three hundred and fifty-two”, built with place-value blocks, partitioned as 300 + 50 + 2, or located on a number line.

Parents can support this learning by using familiar objects, asking children to explain their thinking and encouraging them to show the same number in several different ways.

Teacher Guide for Parents

When teachers introduce numbers to 1000, they do not begin by asking children to memorise long lists of numerals. They first help children understand how numbers are built.

At home, follow the same approach: build it, say it, write it and locate it.

1. Begin with Real Objects

Use objects that are easy to count and group, such as buttons, bottle tops, pegs, pasta pieces, blocks, craft sticks or coins.

Ask your child to make groups of 10. Then place 10 groups of 10 together to make 100.

This helps the child understand that:

  • 10 ones make 1 ten;
  • 10 tens make 1 hundred;
  • 10 hundreds make 1 thousand.

Teacher tip

Do not rush to the written numeral. Let the child physically group and regroup the objects first. The concrete experience gives meaning to the digits they will write later.

2. Explain Place Value

Write a three-digit number such as 364. Point to each digit and explain:

  • 3 is in the hundreds place, so it represents 300;
  • 6 is in the tens place, so it represents 60;
  • 4 is in the ones place, so it represents 4.

Then show:

364 = 300 + 60 + 4

Ask your child to build the number using place-value blocks, bundles of sticks or drawings.

3. Show the Same Number in Different Ways

Choose a number such as 428 and ask your child to show it in several forms:

  • numeral: 428;
  • number name: four hundred and twenty-eight;
  • expanded form: 400 + 20 + 8;
  • place value: 4 hundreds, 2 tens and 8 ones;
  • materials or drawings;
  • position on a number line.

This helps children understand that the representations look different but describe the same quantity.

4. Teach Numbers Containing Zero

Numbers containing zero are often difficult because children may ignore the zero or move the other digits into the wrong places.

Compare:

  • 608 — 6 hundreds, 0 tens and 8 ones;
  • 680 — 6 hundreds, 8 tens and 0 ones;
  • 806 — 8 hundreds, 0 tens and 6 ones.

Teacher tip

Use a place-value chart with a separate column for hundreds, tens and ones. Leave an empty space or place a zero card in the column where there are no groups.

5. Compare Similar-Looking Numbers

Children may confuse numbers that use the same digits in a different order, such as 808, 880, 818 and 881.

Teach your child to compare from the greatest place value first:

  1. Compare the hundreds digits.
  2. If they are equal, compare the tens digits.
  3. If they are still equal, compare the ones digits.

For example, when comparing 818 and 881, both numbers have 8 hundreds. The tens digits are different, and 8 tens is greater than 1 ten, so 881 is greater than 818.

6. Explain Number Lines

Before filling in a missing number, teach your child to identify the interval between the marked points.

Ask:

  • What number does the line begin with?
  • What number does it end with?
  • How many equal spaces are there?
  • Are the numbers increasing or decreasing?
  • Are we counting by ones, tens, hundreds or another interval?

Common mistake

Children sometimes count the marks instead of the spaces. Remind them that the interval is the jump from one mark to the next.

7. Explain Hundreds Charts

On a standard hundreds chart:

  • moving one square to the right adds 1;
  • moving one square to the left subtracts 1;
  • moving one row down adds 10;
  • moving one row up subtracts 10.

Cover parts of a chart and ask your child to work out the hidden numbers using neighbouring squares.

Teacher tip

Ask your child to explain how they know. A correct answer is useful, but an explanation shows whether they understand the number pattern.

8. Teach Ordering Numbers

To order a group of numbers, compare the greatest place value first.

For example, to order 275, 725, 257 and 572:

  1. compare the hundreds digits;
  2. place the numbers into hundred groups;
  3. compare the tens digits when hundreds are equal;
  4. compare the ones digits if needed.

The ascending order is: 257, 275, 572, 725.

Recommended Teaching Sequence at Home

  1. Count a small collection accurately.
  2. Organise the collection into groups of 10.
  3. Combine groups of 10 to make hundreds.
  4. Build a number using hundreds, tens and ones.
  5. Say the number aloud.
  6. Write the numeral.

  8. Locate the number on a number line.
  9. Compare it with another number.
  10. Place several numbers in order.

Common Misconceptions and How Parents Can Help

Reading 405 as forty-five

Use a place-value chart to show 4 hundreds, no tens and 5 ones. Explain that zero keeps the tens place empty.

Thinking 92 is greater than 105 because 9 is greater than 1

Compare the number of digits and the greatest place value. A three-digit number has at least one hundred, while 92 has no hundreds.

Writing digits in the order they are heard

Ask the child to identify the hundreds, tens and ones before writing. Use a place-value chart rather than writing the entire number immediately.

Counting every object one at a time

Encourage grouping into tens and hundreds. Ask, “Could we organise these objects so they are quicker to count?”

Guessing missing numbers on a number line

Ask the child to calculate the interval before entering any missing values.

Believing the next row of a hundreds chart starts randomly

Trace the chart across each row and demonstrate that moving down one square increases the number by 10.

Comparing only the final digit

Teach children to compare from left to right, beginning with the greatest place value.

Activity 1: Bundle and Count

Collect craft sticks, straws or pencils. Make bundles of 10 and place 10 bundles together to represent 100.

Ask your child to record the total as hundreds, tens and ones.
