Build the number with tens and ones. Compare, for example, 16 as one ten and six ones with 61 as six tens and one one.
Contrast number names and representations such as sixteen and sixty. Emphasise the number of tens in each quantity.
Teach students to compare the tens digit first. Only compare ones when the number of tens is the same.
Use empty number lines and discuss relative position. Ask students to locate nearby benchmark numbers first.
Draw attention to vertical patterns. Numbers directly below each other usually increase by 10.
Explain that quantities are universal, but spoken words and written symbols can differ across languages and numeration systems.
Give students a numeral card and ask them to represent the number using tens rods, bundled sticks and individual ones.
Students say the number, identify its tens and ones, and write the numeral on a mini whiteboard.
