Help Year 1 students recognise, continue and create skip-counting patterns using numbers, symbols, shapes and everyday objects. These activities and printable worksheets support counting by 2s, 5s and 10s through number charts, growing patterns, money, role-play and interactive counting games.
Skip counting helps students recognise number patterns and build early algebraic thinking. Instead of counting every number, students count forwards in equal jumps such as 2, 4, 6, 8 or 5, 10, 15, 20.
In this unit, students use number charts, songs, rhymes, stories, blocks, beads, coins, notes and movement games to explore skip-counting sequences by 2s, 5s and 10s.
Students learn to recognise the rule in a sequence, continue a pattern, identify missing numbers and create their own number, shape and object patterns.
They also apply skip counting to practical situations such as counting equal-value coins and notes, packing objects into groups and playing counting games.
These activities support the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 content descriptor AC9M1A01 and its associated elaborations.

Use a number line and physically jump over the numbers that are not said. Emphasise that each jump must be the same size.
Ask students to state the rule before continuing the sequence and check the difference between neighbouring numbers.
Show repeated jumps of 5 on a number line and connect each jump to one more equal group of five.
Remind students that each coin has the same value. Label each jump with the coin value and count the total amount.
Ask students to describe the number of objects in each stage and identify how many are added each time.
Show skip-counting patterns that begin at different starting numbers, such as 3, 5, 7, 9 or 6, 11, 16, 21.
Students highlight or cover numbers while counting by 2s, 5s and 10s on a hundreds chart.
Ask them to describe the visual pattern formed in each column or row.
