Year 5 Science Curriculum Australia: What Students Learn and How to Practise

Year 5 Science asks students to connect scientific ideas with evidence from models, observations and investigations. Topics can include adaptations and environments, matter, Earth and space systems, light and forces.

Explain mechanisms, not only outcomes

Students should move from saying what happens to explaining how or why. Encourage them to use scientific vocabulary in complete explanations and support claims with an observation, model or result.

Use the curriculum unit to keep scope clear

The Year 5 Science curriculum units show the exact concept being taught. Each SkillrHub pathway connects the Topic Guide, Teacher Slides, Worksheet, Practice and Test so students can revisit the concept when an error appears.

Strengthen investigation quality

Students can identify variables, record measurements consistently, compare results and recognise that evidence may contain variation. They should distinguish between what the data shows and what they expected to happen.

Practise interpretation

Include tables, diagrams and short scenarios in science practice. Students need to apply scientific ideas to unfamiliar evidence, not only reproduce definitions. This also prepares them for more formal data analysis in later years.

Free-first learning

Try the free resources first

Before committing to another monthly or yearly learning subscription, use the free curriculum-linked resources available for the student’s current topic. Start with the Topic Guide, use Practice, review mistakes and then take the separate Test.

A larger paid question bank or learning program can be useful, but paying for more volume does not guarantee that a student will use it consistently. If the learner is already working through the free resources and still needs extra tutoring, marking, adaptive practice, reporting or more question volume, compare paid options for that specific need.

Free-first check: establish a consistent Learn → Practice → Test routine before deciding whether an additional paid service offers something the learner will genuinely use.
