Learning intention: Compare storylines, ideas and relationships in literary texts from different contexts. Use a detail from each text to show a similarity and explain a meaningful difference.

Key concept: a similarity needs two pieces of evidence

A storyline is the connected pattern of events. A shared idea or theme is a meaning the events or language suggest, such as friendship, care, belonging or learning from setbacks. A relationship connects characters: friends, relatives, neighbours or others. Context includes a text’s time, place and particular social or cultural circumstances.

Two texts can share an idea while using different settings, actions and endings. “Both contain a boat” is a surface similarity. “Both show a newcomer being welcomed, through a boat journey game and a skate-park invitation” connects actions with an idea.

Use this frame: Both texts suggest ___. In A, ___. In B, ___. A difference is ___. Stories and poems can support more than one interpretation. A plot summary tells what happened; an idea explains a meaning suggested by those events.

E1: Compare friendship through different actions

Original text A: At the skate park, Liv noticed a newcomer sitting alone. She offered to practise a slow turn with him.

Original text B: On a long ship journey, Anika saw a new passenger standing apart. She invited him to join a quiet card game.

Model: Both characters help a newcomer feel included. Liv offers skate practice; Anika offers a card game. The activities and settings differ, but both notice someone alone and make an invitation.

Checkpoint: Must both newcomers enjoy skating? Answer: No. The shared idea comes from the welcoming actions, not identical hobbies.

E2: Nature across different time periods

Original fictional scene A, set in 1890: Elsie carried water to the small orchard during a dry week, hoping the young trees would survive.

Original fictional scene B, set today: Theo saved rainwater in a barrel and watered the school’s new trees during a dry week.

Model: Both show that young trees may need human care during dry weather. Elsie carries water to an orchard; Theo uses stored rainwater at school. Their circumstances differ, while caring for living things is shared.

Historical caution: These are explicitly invented period scenes, not documentary evidence about everyone in 1890 or today. Compare the actual details and avoid claims about what all people in an era believed. For real literary period comparison, use the nineteenth-century Alcott episode and contemporary Australian writing below.

E3: Everyday meals and family relationships

Original text A: In the old farmhouse, the family passed a bowl of stew and left the largest serving for the aunt who had worked late.

Original text B: In a city flat, the family kept a plate of noodles warm for a brother finishing his evening class.

Model: Both families consider a late-arriving relative through food. The meals, places and reasons for lateness differ. Neither scene tells us how every family in that place eats.

Quiet actions and direct words: A grandmother silently repairing a scarf and an uncle saying “Take my coat; I want you to stay warm” can both express care. Name the action or dialogue rather than assuming all families show care in one way.

E4: Read particular First Nations voices

Read Mother and Wildflower by Kirli Saunders, a Gunai woman, on their authorised publisher’s pages. Ask an adult to help with unfamiliar vocabulary. These links contain the complete short poems; audio is optional.

Comparison task: Find one image connecting nature with human meaning in each poem. Explain a similarity and a difference using the actual words you read.

Possible comparison: Both connect nature with human feeling. Mother links the speaker’s identity, land, tidal water and ancestors with belonging. Wildflower uses flowers growing in difficult ground to offer encouragement. Their natural images carry different human meanings.

Context matters: Saunders has explained Mother’s connection with Dharawal Country and colonial history. Country here is connected with identity and ancestry, not simply scenery. Adult reading: the author’s own context. Explain unfamiliar terms carefully; do not invent a cultural meaning for a detail.

These are two works by one author. Add Sally Morgan’s work below to encounter another First Nations author. A particular poem, author or Country does not represent all First Nations Peoples or all Countries/Places.

Reading across Australian and world authors

Use the named, lawful sources: Open with an adult, read or view the specified portion, record its title and creator, then find evidence. These sources are linked, not copied here. The short original Practice extracts remain readable without external accounts.

• Little Bird’s Day (2019), Sally Morgan, illustrated by Johnny Warrkatja Malibirr. Morgan is Palyku; Malibirr is Yolŋu, Ganalbingu clan. Publisher book page; authorised opening landscape preview; publisher page: open the teacher notes for an additional illustration. The opening preview shows a rising yellow sun behind a hill and resting animals. The notes describe a bird’s encounters with natural elements across a day. Compare these specific sources with Mother: connection to the natural world is shared, while the poem’s human ancestral belonging differs from a bird’s daily encounters. Do not claim to have read the whole book from a preview.
• Time for Bed (1993), Mem Fox, illustrated by Jane Dyer. Author’s page with the opening and optional author audio. Read the supplied opening: it addresses a little mouse as darkness falls over a house. Compare its evening/bedtime movement with the rising sun and resting animals in the Little Bird’s Day opening preview. Both connect animal life with the daily cycle; their time of day and direction towards rest or activity differ. Listen to or read the full books before comparing complete story patterns.
• Bindi (2020), Kirli Saunders, illustrated by Dub Leffler, is set on Gundungurra Country. Read the specified family-poem evidence in Magabala’s book page: open the teacher notes: Fambam, pages 9–11, and Rockmelon with Dinner, page 13. The notes’ actual literary snippets suggest a warm family relationship and home laughter. These are notes/excerpts, not the whole novel. Obtain and read the named poem for a fuller comparison.
• Little Women (1868), Louisa May Alcott: Chapter 2, A Merry Christmas. With an adult, read the early breakfast-giving episode only, from the mother’s return and account of the hungry neighbouring family through the girls giving breakfast and returning to their own simple meal. Ask for help with older vocabulary. Compare its nineteenth-century Christmas family cooperation with the family-meal evidence in Bindi: food brings people together, but helping neighbours differs from an ordinary family evening. One fictional household does not represent all American families in that period.

Actual reading check: Name what you read: complete poem, book opening, illustration, notes or full book. A notes-based observation may begin “The publisher notes quote…” rather than “The whole book shows…”. If a link is unavailable, an adult can provide a lawful copy; keep the named-text task pending until its source has actually been read.

4-Step Instructional Sequence

1. Explicit Teaching & Modelling: Read the two welcoming scenes. Highlight one action in each and model a shared idea plus contextual difference.
2. Guided Analysis (We do): Compare the period orchard/school scenes. Sort statements into supplied details and unsupported claims about everyone in an era.
3. Collaborative / Independent Practice: Read the named poems with adult support. Partners compare a natural image and its human meaning, then write their own comparison. Add another Australian and a world-author source from the reading section.
4. Formative Assessment: Use the exit ticket. Check both pieces of evidence, a meaningful link and a difference. For author-specific reading, check the actual named-source response separately from the multiple-choice score.

E3 uses the original meals plus Alcott’s particular historical family episode compared with contemporary Australian family writing. E4 requires actual First Nations source reading and evidence; generic nature exercises cannot substitute for it.

Common Student Misconceptions

• “Matching objects mean matching ideas.” Compare what the characters do and what the text suggests, not only repeated objects.
• “The stories must have identical endings.” Different plots and solutions may express a shared idea.
• “One story shows how a whole culture lives.” Attribute details to this text and its particular context.
• “Country is just another word for scenery.” Respect the author’s own context, relationships and meanings.
• “A preview lets me retell the whole book.” State what you actually read and avoid unseen events.

Support, Core and Extend

Support: Read aloud, explain unfamiliar vocabulary and offer a two-column note space headed A and B. Learners may dictate or discuss comparisons.

Core: Give a shared idea, one detail from each text and one contextual difference.

Extend: Compare two possible shared ideas and decide which is better supported. Read more of the named works to deepen the comparison while keeping author and source distinctions clear.

Important questions and answers

Question: A child shares a candle with a neighbour who is sewing. In another story, a child shares a torch with a neighbour looking for medicine. What matters more than the matching light sources?

Answer: Both share something useful to help a neighbour. The need and setting differ, but the caring action creates a deeper similarity.

Question: If two poems use flowers, must they express the same idea?

Answer: No. One might suggest hope, another loss. Read the surrounding words and support the idea from each poem.

Assessment-style questions and review hints

Original A: Before her friend moved away, Eva gave her a notebook of shared memories.

Original B: Before a sailor left the island, his friends sang about their adventures.

Task: Compare a shared idea and explain how it is expressed differently.

Review hint: Ask why the characters create the notebook or song.

Possible answer: Both remember a friendship at a departure. The notebook records memories in writing; the song recalls adventures through music.

Exit ticket and mastery evidence

Original A: After the clay roof collapsed, Leah widened the walls and tried again.

Original B: After the kite fell, Ming shortened its tail and tested it again.

Task: Write or share a comparison with one detail from each text, a shared idea and a difference.

Possible answer: Both learn from a setback and adjust their design. Leah changes clay walls; Ming changes a kite’s tail.

Adult check: Can the learner support the shared idea from both texts, rather than just say “both make something”? Ask which actions show learning. Named-author breadth is a separate reading requirement: also check the learner’s comparisons of the linked First Nations, Australian and world works.
