Choose words that fit the meaning

Compare similar and opposite words in context. Notice differences in strength, sound, movement and feeling. Learn new vocabulary from supplied sources, then use it accurately in your own sentences.

Success looks like: I can choose and explain a contextual synonym or antonym, compare shades of meaning, and use a newly encountered word with a clear source note.

Materials and time: paper or your usual writing aid and the source cards below. Allow about 20 minutes for the lesson and additional time for original writing. No outside research or practical science equipment is required.

Similar does not mean identical

• Synonym: a word with a similar meaning in a particular context, such as start/begin or finish/complete.
• Antonym: a word with an opposite meaning in a particular sense, such as narrow/wide.
• Context: the surrounding words and situation that help you decide the intended meaning.
• Shades of meaning: small differences between related words, such as a brief glance and a careful inspection.
• Technical vocabulary: words used with a specific meaning in a subject, such as gravity or rhythm.
• Source: where the information came from. A word notebook records the word, its meaning in the source, a new sentence and the source name.

Boundary: explain and use words in familiar short texts. Technical source cards teach vocabulary, not advanced science calculations. A word’s source language is not a licence to invent pronunciations, literal translations or cultural claims.

What does the replacement add?

“The exhausted hikers walked slowly to camp.” Replace walked with trudged to suggest heavy, effortful steps. Strolled suggests a more relaxed walk; skipped adds bouncy movement. Each choice changes the picture.

“Mia looked at the tiny writing carefully.” Examined or studied fits close attention. Glanced suggests a quick look; stared suggests a fixed look; glared can add anger. These words do not form one fixed ladder of strength in every situation.

“The child spoke quietly so the baby would keep sleeping.” Whispered adds very quiet speech. Shouted adds loudness, but does not always mean anger: someone might shout to be heard from far away.

In a story, annoyed may express a mild frustration while furious expresses intense anger. Delighted is usually stronger than pleased. Explain how the words fit your scene without claiming every person must react the same way.

Choose the right kind of opposite

• Light suitcase → heavy suitcase: the contrast concerns weight. Light blue → dark blue: it concerns colour.
• Hard block → soft block: material firmness. Hard puzzle → easy puzzle: difficulty.
• Clear explanation → confusing explanation: ease of understanding. Cloudy can contrast with clear weather, but does not naturally replace this explanation’s opposite.
• Scarce → abundant: little versus plenty available. Flexible → rigid: bending easily versus being stiff. Reluctant → eager: unwilling or hesitant versus keen.
• Visible → invisible: able to be seen versus unable to be seen. Receive → send: directions of transfer towards a recipient versus away from a sender.

Try the opposite in the full sentence. A word about taste, colour or price is not an opposite of a word describing amount just because both could describe the same object.

Use the text’s clues

“The hall was vacant; no group was using it.” The second part explains vacant as unoccupied. Quiet concerns sound: a quiet hall can still contain people.

“The runner was swift and reached the line quickly.” Quickly supports the meaning of swift. “Keep the table tidy” can be restated as “Keep the table neat”; it does not mean the table must be empty or new.

“The storm caused severe damage.” Changing severe to minor makes the damage less serious. Changing a word just to make it longer can distort the information.

“The road was closed, so we used an alternative route.” Alternative means another available choice here. Explain the meaning using this route situation before using the word elsewhere.

Read a source, then use its vocabulary

Notebook model: Word: repel. Meaning in this source: push away. New sentence: “The magnets repelled and moved apart.” Source: Science World. Use the card’s meaning accurately; you do not need to handle magnets or drop objects.

Build a small subject glossary

These original class glossary notes give new terms to use:

• Art — portrait: a picture of a person. “The artist painted a portrait of her grandfather.”
• Music — rhythm: a pattern of beats or sounds. “We clapped the rhythm of the song.”
• History — artefact: an object made by people, often studied to learn about the past. “The museum displayed an old handmade pot as an artefact.”

Use the definition to check a new sentence. The subject heading and context matter: a portrait is not a paintbrush and rhythm is not the colour of a singer’s jacket. The glossary notes are SkillrHub teaching text, not quotations from an outside source.

Read the word, meaning and source together

First Nations Australian languages are diverse, living languages connected with people and places. The AIATSIS Languages alive account provides background on their continuing importance. One word’s origin must not be treated as a rule for all languages.

These short cards paraphrase the named plant/animal list by Desmond Crump, Indigenous Languages Coordinator, in State Library of Queensland’s Aboriginal words in English:

• waratah: an English plant name linked to Dharug in the Sydney region.
• bilby: an English animal name linked to Yuwaalaraay in north-west NSW.
• kangaroo: an English animal name linked to Guugu Yimidhirr in the Cooktown region.

Original use: “I drew a waratah in the garden picture.” Source note: State Library of Queensland links this English plant word to Dharug. This uses the word as explained and preserves the source’s specific attribution.

Your turn: write a new sentence with bilby or kangaroo, then name the language and source from the card. Do not invent a literal translation, pronunciation or a claim that every community uses the same word. This task uses established English words and requires no outside contact.

Official curriculum coverage

The descriptor is the learning target. The following is attributed Australian Curriculum v9 wording.

• E1: building vocabulary from research about technical and learning area–specific topics; for example, gravity and magnetic forces
• E2: determining or clarifying the shades of meaning of synonyms and antonyms
• E3: using words encountered in texts that are formed from a First Nations Australian language; for example, Woomba Woomba or Toowoom was the place referred to by First Nations Australians on the Darling Downs and then the name was referred to as Toowoomba by the drovers

The Toowoomba wording above is reproduced as the official elaboration, not as a separately verified account of that place name’s history. Our source-based classroom examples use the specific SLQ words above.

Notice, compare, research, use

1. Explicit teaching and modelling: use the tiny/brief/narrow example. Read the full sentence, name the intended sense and explain why the substitute fits.
2. Guided analysis: compare light/heavy and light/dark, then the movement words. Ask what meaning changes, rather than choosing the longest word.
3. Collaborative and independent practice: partners read a technical or language-origin card and explain a term. Each learner independently writes a new sentence and records the source.
4. Formative assessment: use the exit ticket below. Check actual word use, contextual reasoning and attribution. If the word does not fit, return to the source meaning and try a simpler sentence.

Quick checkpoint: can “brief” replace “tiny” in a sentence describing an insect’s size? Expected: no; brief usually concerns short duration, not overall physical size. Continue when the learner explains the sense rather than only saying the words differ.

Support: offer two candidate words and read the sentence together. Core: compare meanings and use new words in original sentences. Extend: revise a short paragraph and justify three contextual choices; accept defensible alternatives instead of enforcing one universal word ladder.

Four checks for precise vocabulary

• “Synonyms always swap freely.” Compare the sense, strength and natural wording in the full sentence.
• “A word has only one opposite.” Light/heavy and light/dark show that the intended sense controls the choice.
• “A longer or stronger word is always better.” A minor problem is not necessarily severe. Precision means matching the information.
• “Knowing a source name means I can use the word.” Show an accurate original sentence and explain the meaning. Keep language origins specific and attributed; do not guess new meanings.

Explain your word choice

Must synonyms have exactly the same strength? No. Delighted is usually stronger than pleased; the choice changes the feeling.

Can antonyms be related topic words? Yes. Attract and repel concern magnetic interaction but describe opposite directions.

Why keep a source note? It lets you check the meaning and where the information came from. Use the source actually supplied or read, not an invented reading history.

Does a shared English word imply one First Nations language? No. The three SLQ cards name different origins. Do not generalise beyond the source.

Write and justify

1. Replace “walked” with a more precise word in “The exhausted hikers walked slowly to camp.” Explain the effect. Model: “Trudged” suggests slow, effortful walking and fits the exhaustion.

2. Write a sentence using bright to describe light, then name an antonym that fits. Model: “The lamp gave a bright light.” Dim is a suitable opposite in this sense.

3. Choose one technical source-card word, write a new sentence and explain the meaning, naming the source. Model: “The magnets repelled each other.” Repelled means pushed apart in the Science World card. Accept other accurate new sentences with attribution.

Read the surrounding words and the supplied source card. Use the meaning that fits this context, then explain your own choice. An adult checks actual written work, not a completion tick alone.

Use a new word and explain a choice

Choose waratah, bilby or kangaroo from the SLQ cards. Write a new sentence using it accurately and add the source and language origin. Then write a second sentence with a familiar adjective, give an antonym that fits its sense, and explain the contrast.

One model: “Our poster includes a drawing of a waratah.” The SLQ card links waratah to Dharug. “The display board is wide”; a relevant antonym is narrow, because this contrast concerns width.

Adult check: require meaningful plant/animal word use, correct attributed source-language link, a complete second sentence, a fitting antonym and an explanation of its sense. Accept varied original sentences. If a word is misused, ask the learner to find its meaning on the card and revise.
