Learning goalsSay it simply

1. Outcome Overview & Core Concepts

Students learn to read a range of texts using phonic, semantic and grammatical knowledge to read accurately and fluently, re-reading and self-correcting when required. They identify the relevant language or text feature, point to evidence and explain how it contributes to meaning or purpose. Key concepts include vocabulary, reading.

Learning target: read a range of texts using phonic, semantic and grammatical knowledge to read accurately and fluently, re-reading and self-correcting when required

2. Subject-Specific Content & Key Examples

Hear the sound first

Say “ship” slowly and identify the three phonemes /sh/ /i/ /p/. Then connect each sound to the grapheme or grapheme group that represents it.

Blend for reading

Point to the graphemes in a decodable word, say the sounds without inserting extra sounds, then blend them smoothly into the whole word.

Segment for spelling

Say a word, stretch it orally, count the phonemes and choose graphemes that represent each sound. Read the completed word back to check it.

Transfer

Change one phoneme or grapheme in a known word and read or spell the new word, explaining what changed.

Curriculum Coverage & Elaborations

The content description is the required target. The elaborations below are taught as examples and contexts, not as disconnected checklist wording.

  • E1: using phonic knowledge, word knowledge, vocabulary and grammatical knowledge to read unknown words
  • E2: reading a wider range of texts from different learning areas, including chapter books and informative texts

Practice Thought & Formative Assessment

Use a fresh example that has not been modelled. Ask the student to show the exact clue, feature or language choice and explain or use it independently.

3. Common Student Misconceptions

  • Sound-only guessing: Use both the spoken sound structure and the relevant grapheme/morpheme knowledge.
  • Counting letters as sounds: Segment phonemes orally before mapping them to one or more letters.
  • One rule fits every word: Use the taught pattern, morpheme or word origin and check exceptions in context.
  • No verification: Read the word back in the sentence and check that spelling and meaning both fit.
