The question determines what information should be collected, which categories are needed and how the results should be recorded.

The basic Year 2 data investigation process is:

  1. Ask a question.
  2. Decide what data is needed.
  3. Choose a collection method.
  4. Collect responses or observations.
  5. Sort the data into categories.
  6. Record the data in a list or table.
  7. Count and compare the categories.
  8. Use the results to answer the original question.

Teachers help children understand that data investigations are planned processes. Children should know why they are collecting information before they begin recording responses.

At home, follow this sequence: ask, plan, collect, sort, record, count, compare and answer.

1. Introduce Categorical Data

Categorical data groups responses by a name, description or type.

Examples include:

  • apple, banana, orange or pear;
  • walk, car, bus or bicycle;
  • recycle, reuse or throw away;
  • sunny, cloudy, rainy or windy;
  • yes or no.

The categories describe qualities or groups rather than measurements such as height or mass.

2. Begin with a Clear Question

A survey question should be easy to understand and should produce responses that can be sorted.

Suitable Year 2 questions include:

  • What is your favourite fruit?
  • How do students travel to school?
  • Which day of the week is most popular?
  • Which playground activity do children prefer?
  • Which materials in our rubbish can be recycled?

Questions that are too broad or unclear may produce responses that are difficult to classify.

3. Decide Whether the Question Can Be Answered with Data

Ask children:

  • Can we collect information to answer this question?

  • How will we record the information?

A question such as “What is the best fruit?” is based on personal opinion. A more useful survey question is “Which fruit is chosen as the favourite by the most students?”

4. Choose Relevant Categories

Categories should match the question and allow each response to be recorded clearly.

For a travel-to-school investigation, categories might be:

  • walk;
  • car;
  • bus;
  • bicycle or scooter;
  • other.

An “other” category can be useful when an unexpected response is possible.

5. Avoid Overlapping Categories

A response should usually fit clearly into one category.

For example, using separate categories called “car” and “vehicle” would create overlap because a car is a vehicle.

Revise the categories before collecting data if they are confusing.

6. Conduct a Favourite Things Survey

Ask a small group of people the same question.

Record each response immediately so that no answer is forgotten or counted twice.
