Ask students to identify the larger addend, hold that number in their head and count on only the smaller amount.
Demonstrate that the first count or jump occurs after the starting number, not on it.
Connect each symbol to the action in the story: joining or adding more uses +, while taking away or finding a difference uses −.
Explain that the equal sign means both sides have the same value. Use balanced examples such as 7 + 3 = 6 + 4.
Record each part visibly and check that the parts recombine to make the original number.
Ask students to explain what each number and symbol represents in the original context.
Give students two small collections to combine or one collection from which objects are removed.
Students model the action, draw what happened and record the matching number sentence.
