Year 1 addition should begin with concrete materials and clear part-part-whole language. Students need to see that addition joins parts to make a whole, and that the same total can be made in different ways. Start with objects, ten frames and number lines, then move to number sentences within 20. A common mistake is counting every object from one, even when one part is already known. Encourage students to count on from the larger number and to use known facts to 10. Short practice works best when students explain what the numbers mean, not just write the answer.
