  1. Draw one whole bar divided into 10 equal parts. Shade 3 tenths. Write its decimal name and explain what each part represents.

  2. Use a place-value chart to represent 5.09. Write the value of the 9 and explain why the zero is needed.

  3. A whole is a bundle of 10 equal straws. One straw is cut into 10 equal pieces. Explain the value of one uncut straw and one cut piece, using the bundle as the whole.

  4. Rename 0.83 in two ways: as hundredths, and as tenths plus hundredths. Then write 16 tenths as a decimal.

  5. A ribbon measures 3 metres and 24 hundredths of a metre. Record its decimal length and read it aloud using “point”. Draw a sketch labelling the whole metres and the fractional part.

  6. Count one $50 note, two $20 notes, three $2 coins, two 20c coins and one 5c coin. Show the dollar total and cent total, then write the full amount.

  7. Read $7.65 and 7.65 metres aloud. Explain what the 6 and the 5 mean in each numeral, and why the units must be included.

  8. Tia says 0.50 is greater than 0.5 because it has more digits. Use a model or place-value explanation to decide whether she is right.

Answer guide for parents and teachers
  1. A bar with ten equal parts and three shaded; 0.3. Each part is one tenth of the defined whole.
  2. 5 ones, 0 tenths, 9 hundredths. The 9 is worth 0.09. The zero keeps the 9 in the hundredths place.
  3. An uncut straw is one tenth (0.1). A cut piece is one hundredth (0.01) of the original bundle. Ten cut pieces make a tenth; 100 make the whole.
  4. 0.83 = 83 hundredths = 8 tenths + 3 hundredths. 16 tenths = 1.6 because ten tenths make one whole.
  5. 3.24 m, read three point two four metres. The sketch labels 3 whole metres and 24 hundredths of the next metre.
  6. $50 + $40 + $6 = $96. The coins in cents total 40c + 5c = 45c. The full amount is $96.45.
  7. Seven dollars and sixty-five cents; seven point six five metres. In each numeral 6 is six tenths and 5 is five hundredths. The units distinguish money from length.
  8. Tia is not right. Five tenths can be split into fifty hundredths, so 0.5 and 0.50 represent the same amount. A correct model shades half of equal-sized wholes.
