Additive Problem Solving and Money (AC9M1N05)
Model joining, separating, comparing and simple money situations before choosing an operation and solving.
Practice has a bank of 24 questions and Test has a separate bank of 16. Online attempts currently use five shuffled questions. A grown-up checks drawings, explanations and practical tasks; one short score does not assess the whole skill.
Start with the story, then choose an activity
Use the topic guide or Teacher Slides to model the situation. Draw or build the amounts on the worksheet, use Practice for feedback, then try the separate Test independently. The extra Quiz is another short revision option.
Worked example: join two amounts
A child has 7 dollars and receives 5 more dollars. The amounts join, so 7 + 5 = 12. The child now has 12 dollars. Check that the total is greater than either part and state the money unit.
Change the situation: with 12 counters, give 5 away. Now the whole is 12 and one part is removed: 12 − 5 = 7 counters. Read what happens before choosing addition or subtraction.
An adult can read the story aloud and ask the child to show the amounts with counters, a drawing or play money. Ask what each number means and whether the answer fits the story.
