Foundation Shapes and Shape Sorting Activities

About This Foundation Maths Topic

Shape learning in Foundation begins with handling, sorting, creating and discussing familiar shapes. Students learn that shapes can be recognised by their features rather than only by their colour, size or position.

Children explore familiar two-dimensional shapes such as circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. They sort collections, create shape pictures, form shapes using their bodies and identify shapes within familiar objects.

Common Misconceptions

Believing a shape changes when it is rotated

Turn a square into a diamond-like position and discuss how it remains a square because its defining features have not changed.

Naming shapes according to colour or size

Use several examples of the same shape in different colours and sizes to show that these features do not determine the shape name.

Believing every four-sided shape is a square

Compare squares and rectangles and focus on their observable similarities and differences using age-appropriate language.

Recognising only regular or perfectly drawn shapes

Include shapes drawn in different sizes, orientations and slightly varied forms while keeping the defining features clear.

Confusing a three-dimensional object with a flat shape

Explain that a flat circle may be seen on the face of a cylindrical container, but the entire object is not a circle.

Sorting without being able to explain the rule

Ask students to complete the sentence, “I put these shapes together because they all have...”

Foundation Shapes and Shape Sorting Activities

Activity 1: Shape Sorting Hoops

Place a collection of shapes in the centre of the room and provide sorting hoops labelled with different rules.

Students sort the shapes by colour, size, number of sides or shape name and explain the rule they followed.
