What is AC9MFN01?
AC9MFN01: Recognise, represent and order numbers to at least 20 and connect numbers with quantities and familiar situations.
In Foundation Year, children learn to:
- Count collections accurately.
- Read and write numbers from 0 to 20.
- Match numerals with quantities.
- Order numbers from smallest to largest.
- Identify one more and one less.
- Recognise numbers in everyday situations.
Developing strong number sense in the early years creates the foundation for future learning in addition, subtraction, place value and problem-solving.

1. Count and Collect
Ask children to collect:
- 5 pencils
- 10 blocks
- 15 leaves
- 20 counters
Children count each collection and record the matching numeral.

2. Number Hunt
Hide number cards from 0 to 20 around the room.
When children find a card, ask them to:
- Say the number.
- Write the number.
- Show that many counters or objects.
Skills Developed: Number recognition and numeral formation.
3. Build the Number
Provide linking cubes, blocks or counters.
Ask children to build:
- 7
- 13
- 18
- 20
Skills Developed: Connecting numerals to quantities.
4. Number Line Jump
Create a number line from 0 to 20.
- Jump to 8.
- Jump to 12.
- Find the number after 16.
- Find the number before 10.
Skills Developed: Ordering and sequencing numbers.
5. Numbers Around Us
Encourage children to find numbers in everyday life:
- House numbers
- Calendars
- Price tags
- Clocks
- Sports jerseys
- Number plates
Skills Developed: Understanding that numbers have real-life purposes.
Questions to Ask Children
- Which number is larger, 12 or 15?
- What number comes before 9?
- What number comes after 17?
- Can you show 14 using counters?
- Can you place these numbers in order from smallest to largest?
Common Mistakes Children Make
Counting the Same Object Twice
Encourage children to move or touch each object as they count.
Skipping Numbers
Practise counting forwards and backwards using a number line.
Confusing Numerals
Children sometimes reverse or mix up numerals such as 12 and 21. Provide regular opportunities to read, write and represent numbers.
At-Home Practice Ideas
- Count toys before packing them away.
- Count steps while walking.
- Find numbers during shopping trips.
- Read house numbers.
- Play board games with numbered spaces.
- Look for numbers in books and magazines.
