About This Foundation Maths Topic

Statistics in Foundation Year begins with familiar questions, everyday objects and simple visual representations. Students learn that data is information collected to help answer a question.

Children collect information by observing, asking questions, counting and sorting objects or pictures. They organise the information into groups so that it can be compared and discussed.

Students explore questions such as, “Which toy is most common?”, “Do more children have shoes with laces or without laces?” and “Were there more tigers or kangaroos in the story?”

Common Misconceptions

Sorting without a clear rule

Students may place objects into groups without being able to explain why. Ask them to finish the sentence, “These belong together because...”

Changing the sorting rule halfway through

Encourage students to select one feature at a time. For example, sort all objects by colour before trying a new sort based on shape.

Thinking there is only one correct way to sort

Demonstrate that one collection can be sorted in several valid ways, provided the sorting rule is clear and consistent.

Judging more by the physical length of a row

A widely spaced row may look longer even when it contains fewer objects. Use one-to-one matching or align objects carefully before comparing.

Counting pictures without understanding what they represent

Explain that each picture, sticker or object represents one response or one item in the collected data.

Confusing fewer with more

Use paired comparisons and complete sentences such as, “There are more red blocks than blue blocks.”

Asking questions that cannot be answered with yes or no

Model the difference between “What colour is it?” and “Is it red?” before beginning mystery-object activities.

Treating artificial intelligence as human thinking

Explain simply that an artificial intelligence system uses information and examples to recognise patterns and make a guess.

Foundation Data and Statistics Activities

Activity 1: Sort the Toy Collection

Provide a mixed collection of toys, such as cars, animals, balls, blocks and dolls.

Ask students to sort the toys into groups and explain the sorting rule they used.

Possible categories include toys that move and toys that do not move, soft and hard toys, or toys with wheels and toys without wheels.

Activity 2: Sort It Another Way

After students complete one sort, ask them to mix the objects and sort the same collection using a different rule.

Create two rows of objects representing two responses or categories.
