Year 2 Science Curriculum Australia: What Students Learn and How to Practise
Year 2 Science builds on observation by asking students to identify relationships and patterns, compare evidence and describe changes using increasingly precise language.
What students learn
Topics can include living things and environments, materials and changes, Earth and space observations, forces in familiar situations and investigation skills. Rather than relying on a generic science workbook, use the Year 2 Science curriculum units to find the exact concept.
Connect facts with evidence
Encourage students to answer with both a claim and a reason. “This material is better because…” or “I noticed that…” starts the habit of evidence-based explanation. Simple tables, labelled drawings and comparisons help students record what they observe.
Use practice after the concept is visible
Introduce the idea with an example or demonstration, then use a worksheet to classify, label, predict or explain. Online Practice can present the same concept in new examples, while the Test provides a later checkpoint. This sequence reduces the chance of students memorising a single worksheet pattern without understanding the science.
