Learning goalsSay it simply

Learning goal

Students connect metric prefixes and powers of ten, convert without changing the measured quantity and choose a decimal representation appropriate to the context and instrument precision.

Success criteria

  • I can represent or identify the concept.
  • I can explain the underlying relationship.
  • I can select an appropriate strategy or feature.
  • I can apply it in a new context.
  • I can justify and verify the response.

Curriculum focus: convert between common metric units of length, mass and capacity; choose and use decimal representations of metric measurements relevant to the context of a problem

Convert across related metric units

Use the visual model first. Ask students to identify the quantities, structure or conditions before calculating or explaining.

Multiplying or dividing the numeral compensates for changing unit size. A smaller unit needs a larger numeral for the same measurement.

Choose useful decimal precision

Connect the central relationship to a new context, then verify the conclusion with a second representation, estimate, inverse operation or reasonableness check.

road distance2.35 km more useful than 2 350 m
object thickness4.6 mm more useful than 0.0046 m
medicine volumemL and instrument precision matter
shipping masskg or tonnes based on scale

Do not report more decimal places than the instrument supports. Preserve exact conversions before rounding for presentation.

AC9M6M01: convert between common metric units of length, mass and capacity; choose and use decimal representations of metric measurements relevant to the context of a problem

  • E1: recognising the significance of the prefixes in units of measurement
  • E2: identifying and using the correct operations when converting between units including millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, milligrams, grams, kilograms, tonnes, millilitres, litres, kilolitres and megalitres
  • E3: recognising the equivalence of measurements, such as 1.25 metres is the same as 125 centimetres

Use the central and application models above to connect each elaboration to the same underlying concept.

Questions and answersWith answers

Check understanding

  • Convert 2.375 m to mm.
  • Convert 3.48 kg to g.
  • Choose a unit for thickness.
  • Explain conversion direction.
  • State precision limit.

Evidence of mastery

  • Represent or identify the concept
  • Explain the underlying relationship
  • Select an appropriate strategy or feature
  • Apply it in a new context
  • Justify and verify the response

Decision: continue when students can explain the model, apply it to a new example and justify their check. Otherwise return to the central model and reduce the numerical or representational load.
