How Science and Technology Advance Together

Technologies extend what scientists can observe, measure and analyse; scientific understanding in turn enables new engineering and technology. The relationship is…

Learning goalsSay it simply

New tools create new observations, while scientific understanding enables new technologies and engineering.

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

  • Technologies extend observation, measurement and analysis.
  • Scientific knowledge informs engineering design.
  • Science–technology relationships are iterative and include limitations.

Example 1

Worked reasoning model Fast computing makes large DNA data sets and radio-astronomy signals analysable. Algorithms convert raw signals into patterns scientists can test. New scientific questions then drive faster computing, sensors and data systems.

Australian Curriculum v9.0 — AC9S10H02: investigate how advances in technologies enable advances in science, and how science has contributed to developments in technologies and engineering

Victoria — VC2S10H02, Levels 9–10: Levels 9–10 reciprocal advances among science, engineering and technologies. Victorian Science is banded across Levels 9 and 10, so the VC2S10 code identifies the band rather than a single school year.

NSW: No single one-to-one Stage 5 outcome; the idea is supporting across Stage 5 focus areas and evidence-based decision making (SC5-DA2-01). Where NSW places the closest concept in another Stage or spreads it across focus areas, this page states that relationship rather than claiming a false one-to-one Year 10 equivalent.

Questions and answersWith answers
What is the central idea?
New tools create new observations, while scientific understanding enables new technologies and engineering.
What should a strong response do?
Use the sequence Identify the limitation → Trace the new tool → Explain the new evidence → Follow the application. Connect the evidence, mechanism or data to the claim.
What common trap should I avoid?
Technology is only applied science: Trace feedback in both directions between tool and knowledge.
Practice and reviewReady for practice
  • Technology is only applied science: Trace feedback in both directions between tool and knowledge.
  • A more advanced instrument removes uncertainty: Identify new sensitivity alongside calibration, sampling and interpretation limits.

Keep the Year 10 boundary: Do not describe technological progress as automatic or value-free. Do not claim bigger data alone produces better explanations.

  1. Choose a technology such as telescopes, gene sequencing or medical imaging. Analyse how an advance in the technology changed scientific knowledge and how later science improved the technology.
  2. Evaluate the statement: “Technology is only an application of science.” Use a specific example and evidence in your response.
  3. A new sensor is ten times more sensitive than the previous device. Explain two ways that improvement could change the questions scientists are able to investigate.

Review hint: Use precise scientific vocabulary, show the relevant mechanism or evidence, and state any limitation or uncertainty when the evidence does not justify a stronger claim.
