Year 1 science becomes much easier when children are encouraged to look closely, ask questions and talk about what they notice.
Start with familiar examples such as leaves, rocks, insects or classroom materials. Children can observe colour, shape, texture and movement before they make a prediction.
A good investigation question is short and clear, such as “Which material is the strongest?” or “What happens when we place a plant in sunlight?” Keep the steps predictable and let children record their results with pictures first.
