How to Teach Year 1 Living Things and Daily Changes

Young children enjoy science most when it connects to real life. Living things, weather and daily routines are ideal starting points.

Use what children already know

Begin by asking children to sort living and non-living things. They can bring examples from home or look around the classroom and talk about what they notice.

Daily and seasonal changes can be taught through simple observation charts. A weekly weather chart, a plant diary or a class calendar makes the learning visible and memorable.
