Estimation, Rounding and Reasonableness

Read the quick preparation notes, then start when you are ready.

SkillrHub quiz practice is built for curriculum-aligned revision with answer feedback and a clear review path.

Quick preparation

  • An estimate is a useful nearby amount. Choose rounding or known facts that suit the calculation and the purpose.
  • For a budget, rounding costs up can help you allow enough money. Nearest-dollar rounding may round some costs down.
  • Explain whether your estimate is above or below the exact answer where you can. A close estimate supports reasonableness but does not prove an exact answer.

SkillrHub Test guide

Use this short shuffled test set to check the skill, read feedback and review missed items. Repeat quiz practice to access more of the full question bank over time.

Model: 473 is 27 from 500 and 73 from 400. It is closer to 500, so it rounds to 500.
  • Worked example: Six tickets cost $4.60 each. The total is between 6 × $4 = $24 and 6 × $5 = $30. Allowing $30 covers the ticket cost because every price was rounded up.
  • Common mistake: Do not treat an estimate as the exact bill or change. In addition, equal opposite changes can cancel. In multiplication, rounding one factor up and the other down need not preserve the product.
  • Assessment guidance: Use this short shuffled attempt to practise. Repeat it to meet more questions from the full bank.
  • Review: State what you rounded, calculate the estimate and explain what that tells you about the proposed answer or budget.
