Quick preparation
- Students learn to use comprehension strategies when listening and viewing to build literal and inferred meaning, and begin to evaluate texts by drawing on a growing knowledge of context, text structures and language features. They use the visual model, precise vocabulary and evidence to explain and apply the concept.

- Worked example: After listening to “The gate banged and the dog hid under the table”, explain that the noise may have frightened the dog, using the hiding as evidence.

- Assessment guidance: Listen to the supplied passage read aloud and view any supplied image. Written or spoken explanations remain pending until an adult checks the evidence.
