Chapter 7 • Australian Curriculum AC9SFI03

Foundation Science Sorting, Patterns and Observations Activities

Help Foundation students sort observations, use simple tables and graphic organisers, compare groups and identify patterns in living things, materials and movement.

Australian Curriculum Alignment

Learning area: Science

Year level: Foundation

Strand: Science Inquiry

Sub-strand: Processing, Modelling and Analysing

Curriculum code: AC9SFI03

Content description: Represent observations in provided templates and identify patterns with guidance.

What Students Will Learn

  • Use provided tables and graphic organisers.
  • Sort plants and animals by external features.
  • Link materials to the objects made from them.
  • Identify common features of animal groups.
  • Recognise simple patterns in how objects move.
  • Identify patterns in everyday objects made from similar materials.

Teaching Activities

1. Plant and Animal Sorting

Sort pictures by external features such as wings, fins, fur, leaves or flowers.

2. Materials Display

Create a wall or floor display linking material samples to objects.

3. Animal Group Features

Compare fish, birds, reptiles and mammals using visible features.

4. Movement Pattern Hunt

Observe that round objects roll and wheeled toys move in predictable ways.

5. Material Pattern Hunt

Find groups of objects made from wood, plastic, metal or glass.

6. Use a Simple Table

Record observations in rows and columns.

7. Find the Pattern

Use teacher guidance to identify what repeats or stands out.

Questions to Ask Students

  • How could we sort these?
  • What feature do these share?
  • What is the same?
  • What is different?
  • What pattern do you notice?
  • How can we show our results?

Simple Assessment Ideas

  • Observe students during practical activities and discussions.
  • Ask students to draw, match, sort, point, demonstrate or explain.
  • Use a short exit task linked to the curriculum code.
  • Allow an adult to record a child's spoken response when needed.
  • Look for correct use of simple science vocabulary.

Supporting Different Learners

Additional support

  • Use real objects, photographs and simple picture cards.
  • Model one step at a time.
  • Provide sentence starters and two-choice questions.
  • Allow students to respond by pointing, matching, drawing or speaking.

Extension

  • Ask students to explain the reason for their choice.
  • Invite students to compare two examples.
  • Ask students to record observations in a table or labelled drawing.
  • Encourage students to create and share a new question.
