Year 6 Science Curriculum Australia: What Students Learn and How to Practise
Year 6 Science prepares students for more formal secondary investigation and explanation. Organisms and environments, changes in matter, Earth and space, energy and electricity are explored alongside planning, recording and evaluating evidence.
Use models carefully
Models help students explain systems that cannot always be observed directly. Ask what a model represents, what it leaves out and how it supports an explanation. This builds scientific literacy rather than simple diagram memorisation.
Plan investigations with purpose
Students should identify what they are testing, choose relevant measurements, control important variables where appropriate and record results in a form that can be compared. They should use evidence—not expectation—to support conclusions.
