Multiplication in Year 3 should still be visual and meaningful. Students need to connect equal groups, arrays, repeated addition and number sentences. Start with groups of objects, then arrange the same objects in rows and columns so students can see why 4 groups of 5 is the same total as 5 groups of 4. A common mistake is counting unequal groups and still writing a multiplication sentence. Ask learners to label the number of groups and how many are in each group before calculating.

Common mistakes to watch for
