Year 3 fractions are strongest when students can see the same fraction in more than one way. Use area models, number lines and collections so learners understand that one third is one equal part out of three, not simply the number 3. A common mistake is counting shaded pieces without checking whether all parts are equal. Before asking students to name a fraction, ask them to prove the parts are equal. Once unit fractions are secure, students can combine same-denominator parts to make larger fractions and complete a whole.
