Division becomes much clearer when students meet both meanings: sharing and grouping. In sharing questions, the number of groups is known and students find how many are in each group. In grouping questions, the size of each group is known and students find how many groups can be made. Many Year 3 students mix these two questions because the division sentence can look the same. Use drawings with labels such as total, groups of and number of groups. Then connect each division fact back to multiplication.
