Practise moving beyond bare assertions by checking facts and opinions, choosing relevant support, matching claim strength to evidence, recognising other viewpoints and selecting authoritative sources.
Quick preparation
- Fact: objectively checkable. Opinion: a belief, feeling or evaluation that reasonable people may dispute.
- Evidence test: relevant → sufficient → checkable → authoritative.
- Claim test: do not let words such as all, always or best go beyond the evidence.
- Different views: acknowledge another position respectfully, then respond with a reason.
