  1. Draw a place-value chart for 307, 307 × 10 and 307 × 100. Explain what happens to the value of the digit 7.

  2. Calculate 64000 ÷ 1000 without a calculator. Explain your answer using thousands.

  4. Calculate 4200 ÷ 70. Show how the same unit can be used for both numbers.

  5. A shop orders 23 packets with 300 buttons in each packet. How many buttons are ordered? Show the calculation using hundreds.

  6. A 9600 g supply of rice is put into 400 g bags. How many full bags are made? Check your answer.

  7. A student writes 18 × 200 = 360. Correct the answer and explain the place-value mistake.

  8. Eight boxes each hold 80 labels. The labels are repacked into packets of 40. How many full packets are made? Show both calculations.

Answer guide — open after completing the work

  1. 307; 3070; 30700. The 7 is worth 7, then 70, then 700. Each multiplication scales every digit’s value. Keep the empty place between the 3 and the 7.

  2. 64 64000 is 64 thousands, so it contains 64 groups of 1000. Check: 64 × 1000 = 64000.

  3. 680 40 is 4 tens. 17 × 4 = 68, so 17 × 40 = 68 tens = 680.

  4. 60 4200 is 420 tens and 70 is 7 tens. 420 ÷ 7 = 60. Check: 60 × 70 = 4200.

  5. 6900 buttons 23 × 3 = 69, so 23 × 300 = 69 hundreds = 6900. The product counts buttons, not packets.

  6. 24 bags 9600 g is 96 hundreds of grams. 400 g is 4 hundreds. 96 ÷ 4 = 24 and 24 × 400 = 9600.

  7. 18 × 200 = 3600 200 is 2 hundreds. Since 18 × 2 = 36, then 18 × 200 = 36 hundreds = 3600. The answer 360 uses tens instead of hundreds.

  8. 16 packets 8 × 80 = 640 labels. Then 640 ÷ 40 = 64 tens ÷ 4 tens = 16 packets. Check: 16 × 40 = 640.
