Eight written homework tasks

Complete each task independently. Show your reasoning and label all drawings. Use separate paper for larger arrays, timelines, timetables and card-game records. An adult should inspect the actual written or practical work using the answer guide.

1. Task

On Monday a visit starts at 9:47 am and ends at 11:12 am. Draw a timeline through a whole hour, label each elapsed jump and give the duration in hours/minutes and in minutes.

2. Task

On Tuesday a train leaves at 11:38 am and arrives at 1:07 pm the same day. Both places use the same local time. Draw a timeline through noon, label every jump and find the duration in hours/minutes and in minutes.

3. Task

A journey starts at 10:55 pm Friday and ends at 12:40 am Saturday, the next day, in the same local time. Draw a timeline through midnight, label each day and elapsed jump, and give the duration in hours/minutes and minutes.

4. Task

Show the calculations to convert 2 hours 35 minutes to minutes and 245 seconds to minutes/seconds. Then compare 3 minutes 10 seconds with 185 seconds, stating which is longer and by how many seconds.

5. Task

A performance ends at 12:15 pm Thursday after 50 minutes. Find its starting time. Draw a backwards timeline through noon, label the jumps, then write a forward check from your start to the finish.

6. Task

Create a Wednesday activity timetable on separate paper, starting at 10:50 am. In order, include a 15-minute warm-up, 30-minute game, 10-minute rest and 35-minute team challenge with no gaps. Write every start and finish with am/pm. Show the total-duration calculation and give the total in minutes and hours/minutes.

7. Task

Plan a Friday routine starting at 3:00 pm with four named 35-second activities and three 20-second rests between them, with no rest at the end. Make a seven-row timetable on separate paper showing every start and finish to the second. Show the total-duration calculation and express it in seconds and minutes/seconds.

8. Task

Public source notes: ACARA links Nyangumarta use of the Sun with days and Moon phases with months. In NMA’s Sky stories, Kirsten Banks, Wiradjuri, links the Emu’s position with a season. For each of the three examples, write the observed pattern, how a return can mark time, and the People or speaker/source. Explain why a seasonal marker alone cannot measure a bus ride’s exact minutes.

Complete answer guide

Task 1

Answer: 1 hour 25 minutes = 85 minutes.

For example, 13 min to 10:00 am, 1 h to 11:00 am and 12 min to 11:12 am. The jumps total 85 min. Require Monday and am labels, elapsed jump values and both equivalent totals. Accept other correct partitions.

Task 2

Answer: 1 hour 29 minutes = 89 minutes.

22 min to 12 noon, then 1 h 7 min to 1:07 pm gives 89 min. Require Tuesday, the noon point, correct am/pm, labelled jumps and both totals. Accept alternative correct jump partitions.

Task 3

Answer: 1 hour 45 minutes = 105 minutes.

10:55 pm Friday to midnight at the start of Saturday is 1 h 5 min. Add 40 min to get 1 h 45 min. Require the day boundary and all jump labels; accept other correct partitions.

Task 4

Answer: 155 minutes; 4 minutes 5 seconds; 3 minutes 10 seconds is 5 seconds longer.

2 × 60 + 35 = 155. 245 = 4 × 60 + 5. 3 min 10 s = 190 s, which is 5 s more than 185 s. Require all calculations and clear units.

Task 5

Answer: It starts at 11:25 am Thursday.

Back 15 min to noon, then 35 min to 11:25 am. Check: 35 min to noon plus 15 min to 12:15 pm is 50 min. Require Thursday and am/pm, the noon point, both jump labels and the forward check.

Task 6

Answer: Warm-up 10:50–11:05 am; game 11:05–11:35 am; rest 11:35–11:45 am; challenge 11:45 am–12:20 pm, all Wednesday. Total 90 min = 1 h 30 min.

15 + 30 + 10 + 35 = 90 minutes. Each finish equals the next start. Require all four rows and correct times, noon crossing, Wednesday context and complete sum including rest.

Task 7

Answer: Total 200 seconds = 3 minutes 20 seconds; finish 3:03:20 pm Friday.

All Friday pm: marching 3:00:00–3:00:35; rest 3:00:35–3:00:55; arm circles 3:00:55–3:01:30; rest 3:01:30–3:01:50; balancing 3:01:50–3:02:25; rest 3:02:25–3:02:45; side steps 3:02:45–3:03:20. 4 × 35 + 3 × 20 = 200. Require four suitable names, seven intervals, both totals and working. Accept any suitable activity names.

Task 8

Answer: Daily, lunar and seasonal patterns can return and provide time markers. Exact bus minutes need a clock or timer.

Accept: Sun/light-dark pattern returns daily (Nyangumarta, ACARA); Moon-phase sequence returns across a lunar cycle (Nyangumarta, ACARA); Emu sky position helps indicate a recurring season (Kirsten Banks, Wiradjuri, NMA Sky stories). Require all three time connections and attributions plus the clock/timer limitation. Students use these supplied public notes; no invented cultural story is requested.
