Quick preparation

  • Choose the attribute, instrument and unit: length, mass, capacity, duration or temperature. Read the unit on a digital display as well as the digits.
  • On a scale, find two labelled values and count the equal intervals between them. Divide their difference by the number of intervals to find each step.
  • Read whole and part units carefully. Estimate between marks only as precisely as the instrument allows, and explain how you checked the measurement.

Model: The labelled difference is 300 g across 6 equal intervals. Each interval is 50 g, so the pointer reads 200 g + 150 g = 350 g.
  • Worked example: A thermometer has five equal intervals from 20 °C to 30 °C. Each interval is 2 °C, so the third interval above 20 °C reads 26 °C. If an object's ends line up with 2 cm and 9 cm on a ruler, its length is 9 − 2 = 7 cm.
  • Common mistake: Count spaces between marks, not the marks themselves. A timer showing 02:35 in minutes:seconds means 2 minutes 35 seconds, not 2.35 minutes.
  • Materials and practical tasks: Some tasks need a ruler, a measuring jug, a timer or other named instrument. Prepare the equipment with an adult or complete the task in class. Record the actual measurement and unit; an adult checks practical work before awarding credit.
  • Review: Explain the value of one interval, the starting reading and the pointer position. For a made instrument, compare several readings with a trusted instrument.
