Quick preparation
- Use multiplication facts to 10 × 10 and their related division facts. An array shows equal rows and columns; turning it preserves the total.
- Build a less familiar fact from known facts: double, halve, split groups, or add or remove one whole group. Explain what each part counts.
- Extend facts to larger mental calculations without a calculator. Keep track of tens and hundreds, and check using the inverse relationship.

- Worked example: Use 6 × 7 = 42 to find 60 × 7: sixty is six tens, so the result is 42 tens, or 420. The inverse check is 420 ÷ 7 = 60. For 23 × 4, split 23 into 20 and 3: 80 + 12 = 92.
- Common mistake: One more group of 8 adds 8, not 1. When you use a fact with tens, keep the tens unit in the answer.
- Materials and practical tasks: Have paper, a pencil and small paper cards ready. Drawing and game tasks require your actual work; an adult checks the array, calculations, rules and recorded play before awarding credit.
- Review: Name the known fact that helped, explain your strategy and check a related division fact. Accept a different strategy when every step is correct.
