Punctuating Dialogue

Before you begin
Ava said, “We should leave now.” The speech tag comes first, followed by a comma. With the tag last, write: “We should leave now,” Ava said. The comma goes inside the closing quotation mark; the full stop ends the sentence after said.
Use paper or your usual writing support. If listening to a question, also inspect the written options or ask an adult to name the punctuation marks exactly: a spoken reading alone may not reveal which marks are printed. A student can dictate punctuation and paragraph breaks; the adult checks the actual recorded writing.
