Language for Formal and Informal Relationships
Read the example, then begin a five-question shuffled test attempt.
The full Test bank contains 16 questions, including selected responses and written or spoken tasks. Repeat attempts to meet more questions.
Before you begin
Keep your message clear while choosing language that suits the listener, purpose and situation. Formal and informal language are not the same as polite and rude.
Worked model from the Topic Guide: To a classmate: Pass me the pencil, please.
To a less familiar adult: Could I please borrow a pencil?
Both requests can be respectful. The second uses a question to ask for something from a person you know less well.
Check your choice: Explain an exact word or phrase. Keep the original meaning when revising. Welcome different ways to contribute, and check preferred names and local guidance instead of guessing.
Written and spoken tasks: Complete the actual task using writing, speech or your usual communication support. A parent or teacher checks the response against its model and guidance in Review answers. Saving a response or ticking that work is ready does not award credit.
