Base Words, Prefixes and Suffixes

Read the quick preparation notes, then start when you are ready.

SkillrHub quiz practice is built for curriculum-aligned revision with answer feedback and a clear review path.

Quick preparation

  • Students learn to understand how to apply knowledge of common base words, prefixes, suffixes and generalisations for adding a suffix to a base word to read and comprehend new multimorphemic words. They use the visual model, precise vocabulary and evidence to explain and apply the concept.
  • Use this routine: Notice → Read/View → Discuss → Apply → Explain.
  • Watch for every word part is a morpheme: Morphemes carry meaning or grammatical function.

SkillrHub Test guide

Use this short shuffled test set to check the skill, read feedback and review missed items. Repeat quiz practice to access more of the full question bank over time.

  • Worked example: In “replay”, the base is “play” and “re-” means again. For “hoped”, drop the final e from “hope” before adding -ed.
  • Common mistake: A suffix rule may need a spelling change. Check the base word, the ending and the meaning in the sentence.
  • Assessment guidance: Use the word parts and sentence meaning. An adult reviews written responses against the requested spelling and explanation; saving a response does not mark it correct.
  • SkillrHub review path: Use feedback to name the misconception, practise a corrected example, and retest only after you can justify the answer aloud.
